European Topic Centre on climate change adaptation
The European Environmental Agency, EEA has established a new Topic Centre on Climate Change Adaptation to support its monitoring network, Eionet. A Danish contribution will be provided through KFT. The objective is to gradually gather and integrate all available knowledge on climate adaptation, thereby reducing the current fragmented nature of information. In addition, the topic centre will focus on harmonization of monitoring systems related to climate change impacts, vulnerability and disaster risks. The topic centre will also cooperate and network with member countries not only with regard to status reports but also with regard to climate adaptation strategies.

The topic centre has 10 participating institutions from 9 countries and is headed by Sergio Castellari from the Euro-Mediterranean Centre for Climate Change, CMCC, in Bologna. The topic centre relates primarily to the PEER  and CIRCLE  networks. Senior scientist Hans Sanderson, NERI, will be in charge of Work Area 3 of the topic centre: “Support the development and implementation of EU policy” concerning the policy part of the adaptation measures in relation to EU’s white paper on climate change adaptation. This will mainly involve “climate-proofing” of key policies, especially relating to water issues, biodiversity, health, structural policies, agriculture, soil, and prevention of disasters such as the heavy floods that Europe has experienced in recent years.

PhD-course.  6-8 November 2010, Stockholm Environment Institute, Sweden
Deadline for submission: 15/8 2010
The PhD-course: “Bridging the science, policy and practice of adaptation to climate change in the Nordic countries” invites participants to explore the linkages between adaptation science, policy and practice with members of the NORDic Climate change Adaptation research Network (NORDCLAD-net). The course runs in coordination with the conference ‘Climate adaptation in the Nordic countries: science, practice and policy’ which will be held in Stockholm 8-10 November. The aim is to encourage new interdisciplinary thinking which contributes to the re-conceptualisation of theory, policy and practice concerning adaptation to climate change. New perspectives of the relationship between adaptation and mitigation and the development of socially relevant adaptation policy will be discussed. Lessons will be learned from current processes of adaptation already taking place in Nordic settings.

KFT's International Involvement
The Interreg-project BALTADAPT (Baltic Sea Region Climate Change Adaptation Strategy) seeks to provide joint transnational solutions to address the sustainable management of the Baltic Sea in the context of climate change. There is relevant but fragmented climate adaptation experience in the region both at national and regional levels. The project will aim at drafting a climate change adaptation strategy for the whole Baltic Sea Region, as called for by the action plan accompanying the EU Baltic Sea Region Strategy. The project is lead by Erik Buch, Head of Department at Centre for Ocean and Ice, Danish Meteorological Institute. Danish participation includes NERI (National Environmental Research Institute) and the KFT- secretariat. The project will run during 2010-2013 and is funded with EURO 2.8 million by the Monitoring Committee of the Baltic Sea Region Programme 2007-2013.

KFT is the Danish representative in the newly established CIRCLE–2 Era-net: “Climate Impact Research and Response Coordination for a Larger Europe” established under the EU 7th framework programme. The aim of CIRCLE-2 is to coordinate European transnational research funding on Climate Change Impact, Vulnerability and Adaptation (CCIVA) and to facilitate the transfer of research outcomes which European and national decision makers need in order to design effective and economically efficient adaptation initiatives and strategies. Furthermore CIRCLE-2 is a network that share experiences and lessons learnt on how to manage and fund CCIVA research and on the development of national/regional adaptation practices. This also includes international cooperation with non-European countries and organisations as well as involvement of countries with less diverse CCIVA research programmes. A new CIRCLE-2 homepage is still under construction. For further information please consult the CIRCLE homepage.

The Danish Board of Technology - Conference on Climate Change Adaptation
Adaptation to climate change implies a complex societal process involving many stakeholders, decisions, and options. KFT's main task is a. o. to work on the science-policy interface and support a science based development of climate change adaptation and capability in the Danish society. KFT is in cooperation with The Danish Board of Technology and Information Centre for Climate Change Adaptation involved in arranging a Conference on Climate Change Adaptation  which will take place on 25th October 2010 in Copenhagen.

The conference will focus on effects of climate change and involve researchers, stakeholders and decision makers in discussions about options of how to handle the challenges in a science-policy interface perspective.

Database on Climate Research Projects
KFT wish to draw the attention to the Danish database on climate research projects hosted by KFT. The database constitutes a tool to support the coordination of accumulated research knowledge in Denmark and is also a platform for disseminating new findings on climate research and in addition a basis for establishing research networks across the traditional fields of research. According to KFT, Danish researchers and their research projects are interesting and valuable also in an international context, the database is accessible for KFT’s international network as well as fellow researchers.

Please, use the web formula to add new projects. Provided that a summary or a project description is already available, it will take only 5-10 minutes to fill in the form. By adding additional projects you also accept that details about the project will be made public in the database.
